Ifunny: What's on It Isn't Funny

Well, here's something interesting (first post in November). I haven't talked about a website since my return to this blogspot. I've discussed a few websites in particular including TheTopTens, Imgur and the troll site ViralHog. If you haven't seen those posts, I would recommend checking them out. But anyways, in today's post we are discussing Ifunny; an image sharing website but also an application that people post meme's, funny images, gifs and several other things, but has been a mixbag due to heavy swearing, porn images (even though it's shown they're against it in their terms of service), solicitation and copyright. Most of all, the community is nothing but garbage (probably worse than Imgur).

History & Origin / The Rise:

Imgur on November 5, 2014

Ifunny was created by two different companies: IFunny Inc., FunCorp Limited and an individual named Okrujnost. The application launched back on April 26, 2011 (right around the time when the poorly drawn memes were taking off). It was released for iOS devices and on November 25, 2011, for Andriod devices. It is an application that was created in Cyprus, the same country that TheSoul Publishing is on (might make a post on them in the future). In 2013, they launched the desktop version (formerly in the browsers), offering people to upload images from their computer rather than using a phone. Anyways, nobody knew about it being an app until the later years when it started to expand its community. When the website was registered, the domain expired and it used a website builder called GoDaddy. Kind of ironic since GoDaddy isn't reliable for website building in this day in age versus something like Squarespace. Anyways, Ifunny was its prime as many users seem to enjoy the app a lot as well as the website (in the early days) Ifunny has been slowly growing its community but in the complete wrong ways.

The Fall:

The Watermark / Unfunny Memes / Severe Drop in Quality:

I figured I would start out with this one since this became a meme at some point. In the early days, when you would save and download an image from the application there would be a small little Ifunny watermark at the bottom. It was a little noticeable at first until the years went on (with a numerous amount of updates) and the watermark became more noticeable. Going so far with sticking the watermark on stolen images. This blew up into a meme and for obvious reasons, it's highly annoying at the same time. Just because watermarking an image and claiming that the image is yours doesn't make you a good person.

Apart from the watermarks and the issues with Ifunny (which I haven't talked about yet), how are the memes? Well even if you compare the memes back then to today, they were way better than today's standards. The memes that are posted to Ifunny today aren't really funny (and that's the tagline). many of the "memes" and the images are either too real or too serious and that is the main problem with both the site and the application. Many of the users on the site seem to be grasping for a favorite or a comment on their images, some to which I don't understand. The images shown above are just a few examples of what's exactly wrong with it as a whole. Honestly, they look like something that were posted between the era of 2012-2014 and that's not saying much.
