TheTopTens: An Outdated Site for Entitled People

Site Layout From 2013-2014

This post is old and was made back on July 14, 2022

Often times I do take a break from making YouTuber based posts and switch the content around and make something where I talk about websites (mostly the bad ones in general because there more entertaining). For this website were going to talk about today is called TheTopTens, a list-based website (made before Tierlists or TierMaker) where anyone can make a Top 10 list, make honorable/dishonorable mentions and even voice one's opinion by writing comments under each item. Unfortunately, after 2014 rolled around and came 2015, the site became one of the most toxic websites to visit and you couldn't voice your own opinion. Well talk about that later on in the post.

The Rise / Brief History:

The site was established in 2005, the same year when YouTube began to take off. In its early stage, the site was completely inactive as there was no one visiting, and coding back then wasn't as advance as what it is today. In 2009 the domain expired and was put up for sale. While the site was still up, there wasn't much to view during that time period, like you couldn't view lists or do anything. Around February of 2010, the site had sponsor listings and also kept the same lists in the sidebar. The site remained inactive again in 2011 and in mid 2013, anonymous user (admin) bought the domain and decided to turn it into something new. It had a simple and unique layout as the image shown above. Now users were able to create an account to make their own lists. This was the next step for TheTopTens as users continue to increase as well as the lists they make. The site's layout was changed in 2015 to where it's a new and improved version from the original. Now you can see what users are voting (in terms of items on a list), commenting and so on. They also give you some of the most popular and recommended lists on the homepage. At the time I'm making this post in 2022, the site has little over 202k lists made and the number is continuing to grow every day.

The Fall:

Site Layout From 2015-Today

Let's Face it, after 2014 rolled around and at the start of 2015, things started to get out of hand in terms of the community and in terms of the userbase. The first thing has to do with the frontpage. When you first go to the website, it gives you some of the most popular lists and some recommended lists of their choosing. Lists like Top 10 Greatest Actors and Top 10 Best Movies of All Time seem to be 'normal' lists (unless if they added really bad ones to those lists) so far but then you have the community that is overrun by children and come up with some of the stupidest lists in the history of the internet. Allow me to show you a few:

  • Top 10 Best YouTubers: They put worst content creators on the list including SSSniperWolf, Shane Dawson, GradeAUnderA, AzzyLand, TheFineBros, and many others.

The very first problem with the site is that you will see a similarity Most of the lists are the same thing but rearrange differently. You have the option to remix the list and it will be shown in the sidebar under 'Remixes' which is another way to make lists, but you can't make duplicates. A primary example of this is if you make a list titled Top 10 Best Video Game Characters, then that list will be merge with another one such as Top 10 Video Game Characters because it would be the same or identical. Users and Non-Users have the ability to vote on any item on the list. For Non-Users you can only do it once per day but for people who have an account there can make as many comments as they want. You would have to go to the site to see the full experience.

So, the reason I wanted to make this is because well, the site itself is extremely old and dated and nowadays its users that complain all day because they have nothing else to do. Like I said before, it's been overrun by kids and therefor is what made the site terrible as of 2022. Then again, the site was still considered bad at the time, but it's gotten worse over the years. People will have a defense in the lists they make and it's fucking pathetic. Plus, TierMaker and all those other tier making sites is I guess overtaking TheTopTens little by little. As shown in the picture above, a website called sitejabber rates sites by user's reviews and at the moment, TheTopTens is rated 2 out of 5 stars. It's mostly it being a dumb community. With that it's no surprise.
