What happens when you combine a company that specializes in animation as well as anime/manga with the abusive work environment and trying to silence people into the abyss? Well, it's very simple as you get companies like Funimation, Crunchyroll and of course Toei Animation which is what we're going to talk about today. I typically stay away from talking about these companies since it's long and boring. In fact, they're uninteresting to discuss because on how manipulative they can be. Obviously, animation companies have been around for a long time and with each one, they try to censor out YouTuber's who critique their movies and television shows. That is what Toei Animation.
Toei Animation was founded on January 23, 1948, by Kenzō Masaoka and Zenjirõ Yamamoto. Kenzō was known for producing Anime back in the 1920s with the first feature film that he produced was titled 'Sea Palace.' However, Toei Animation was controlled by Toei Company Ltd. which also produced films during the time era between 1954 to today. Toei Animation is also known for producing a bunch of series like One Piece, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Sally the Witch to other projects like Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh. It wasn't until 2004 that Toei Animation Inc. (the sister company) would be created for the American broadcast including redubs for most of the shows as well as changing things to fit the guidelines and the target audience. Toei Animation still continues to this day producing animations.
The Fall:
Not Understanding Fair Use:
Toei Animation is the primary example of what they don't understand about fair use, whether it would be fandubs or critiques. It's almost as if they're way behind the times when it all came down to this. The first example is TFS formerly known as TeamFourStar. If you've seen their stuff, then you know that they're popular from the abridge series of Dragon Ball Z which they made. Unfortunately, they ended up getting hit by Toei because Dragon Ball Z is a series that Toei owns. TFS fires back saying that the parody series is protected under fair use. The whole situation lasted between when they started back in 2008 to 2020. It's also the reason why TFS decided to finish on the DBZA series and not make anymore abridge episodes. They even addressed it in a video on their channel. This is primarily because of Toei ruining everything. If it weren't for TFS, then nobody would care about them or the original DBZ.
Another situation is with another YouTuber by the name of TotallyNotMark. In December of 2021, Toei Animation claimed 150 videos from Mark's channel despite it being protected under fair use (essentially 150 videos taken down). Mark had made two separate videos addressing the situation (deleted both videos because they've been resolved but reuploaded from someone else). At the time, he wasn't going to be supporting anymore Toei releases until the situation was resolved. Several YouTuber's like PewDiePie and Joey Bizinger made videos all about it. The good news was that YouTube reached out to Mark to discuss in private and with success, the videos were reinstated. It goes to show that Toei tries whatever it can to silence people on any sort of platform.
