It's no surprise that when a company comes around, they unleash their full power against content creators no matter what happens. It's the primary reason why video distribution sites like ViralHog and JukinMedia are considered to be the worst ones in terms of the copyright and what we consider as fair use. Well today I found another site that's just as bad as the rest of them and for this reason we have CollabDRM; a company/website like ViralHog that makes the promise of you earning money by signing up and letting them license your video but ended up giving false copyright claims against known YouTubers for content that wasn't theirs. Of course, content that isn't theirs is still fair use.
Brief History / Origin:
Website 2017-Present. |
CollabDRM was founded in September of 2017 by many of the members of Collab (founded in 2012) which is like what you call a video development creator company as well as them being in the software development. The company takes place in Los Angeles, California and can hold roughly 100-250 employees. It is a privately owned company, and it is for profit gaining their total funding amount to $3M. CollabDRM specializes in video sharing and video distribution. Much like ViralHog, you sign up with their services for them to license any of your videos to basically make profit. Depending upon how popular your videos get, you'll earn a certain amount of income. You would have to do the waiting process to get your first payment.
Why Their Terrible: The ViralHog Clone
Copyright Abuse / Doesn't Understand Fair Use / Alinity vs PewDiePie:
Yep, we knew where this was going. I was going to say that it pays tribute to ViralHog. However, unlike ViralHog where it strikes peoples videos the follow their license, CollabDRM does that but a lot worse as they will strike down any video that isn't theirs or videos that aren't part of their license. Even if a video is part of their agreement, it is considered under fair use (which they haven't learned at all). As shown in the photo above is just some of the tweets from various different replies and some of the YouTubers that got affected by this. Many of these tweets can be found under the #CollabDRM. One YouTuber that got hit hard was Jamesski where he got hit the hardest by it (as explained in the Tipster video). Several different YouTuber's like BrentTV and Jason Asselin (including others) made videos them because they got struck down by them. Once again CollabDRM doesn't understand the concept of Fair Use when they see it.
Here's where it gets way more interesting and quite frankly pathetic. One of the Biggest YouTuber's named PewDiePie had one of his videos striked down by a Twitch Streamer named Alinity for calling her a Twitch Thot (way back in 2018). You know, the girl that does inappropriate shit as well as abusing and throwing her cat without ever getting terminated from Twitch? Well, the interesting part about this is that PewDiePie was struck again (the same year) but this time by (you guessed it) CollabDRM. In a video posted by FUD Buddy (shown above), she openly admitted the copyright claims as well as working with CollabDRM behind the scenes. Many YouTubers like Philip DeFranco, Kwite and Kappa Kaiju made videos on the situation which should've got Alinity terminated by Twitch but unfortunately it hasn't.
